Game-based Learning Examples

USDA NASS Whack-cronym - A fun game designed to help new employees of the USDA's stats division learn industry jargon and organizational terms.

Hang Man Game - An award-winning online game designed to help kids studying Biology by reinforcing vocabulary terms. I developed an engine for changing out words and clues for easy maintenance and extensibility. This game is being used in Biology, Chemistry and Earth Science programs at Keystone National High School.

USDA Power Panther Word Jumble - An educational game used in the USDA's Eat Smart, Play Hard Campaign. Developed several e-learning games but this one was chosen for the site.

Blood Counts - Interactive CD that taught children with cancer how to read their medical charts. Used cartoons, music, and games to reinforce learning as well as to entertain.

Platform-style game - made with Director as an exercise in game programming. Led to games for USDA and whymilk.com

AVAM- Build Your Own Robot - An interactive "toy" created for the American Visionary Art Museum's Web site. Originally presented in a pop-up window.(offsite)

Distributed Learning Environments - A HTML lesson about Distributed Learning Environments wrapped in a story about an island of dinosaurs. When first published, the test results were compiled in a database. Note: there was no iMac when I made this...I guess it was a lucky guess.

E-learning Examples

Delta/Porter-Cable Video Library - Originally part of an internal training program, course was re-purposed for external audience. Recorded/edited all video, produced all audio, and photography. Developed page templates for tools to aid in rapid design and development. (Offsite)

Institute of Museum and Library Services - National Leadership Grant Project Planning Tutorial - An all HTML Web site that utilizes highly interactive exercises (Offsite). Created for a broad audience with different learning needs and technical infrastructures. Canal Bridge Consulting in Bethesda, MD was the Prime Contractor. Accomplishments:

  • Discovered user demographics through audience research
  • Conceptualized and developed UI based on user inputs
  • Developed prototype
  • Designed interactions to meet instructional needs
  • Created page templates to speed up development process

National Museum of Natural History - Dinosaurs - A Web site that utilizes HTML for content and Flash for interactives. Created for a broad audience. Responsibilities included designing/developing the Tree of Life interactive and building all of the content pages. (Offsite)

E-Learning Interactive - A Drag and Drop exercise. Test your knowledge of construction terms. (908kb)

Multimedia Information Presentation - Originally part of a director projector distributed to Documentum's Sales Force. I was responsible for the entire production from script writing to animation to voice-over to music production.(604kb)

Process Animation - Flash-based animation describes how a particular LMS works.

eLearning Rollovers - An example of how a Director/Shockwave piece can be used in an eLearning presentation.

Prototype for eLearning Module - I created this for a major auto manufacturer. This is the prototype and is all I'm allowed to show. When using it, please ignore the error message you may get when submitting the first form...its a dummy. The final piece had audio on each page (with controls), lots of interactions, and lots of files. There were tens of thousands of files that I had to manage.

Java Drag and Drop - simple dag and drop created in Java. Red goes to red, blue to blue, grey to either. Requires no plug-ins.

Other Examples

Baltimore Area Visitors and Convention Association (BACVA) - Developed calendar of events system using JSP. Note: It looks like they updated the site but some of the functionality is still there.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital - Developed Perl-based search engine as the navigation system for the site. When the site was launched, the only way to navigate was to search for a topic.
